Day Nineteen - Awaiting the Move

Alright folks, you are reading history today. The first male Hasty to write the blog. You're stuck with Mike tonight. I'm sure I won't be as good as Aunt Judi, Jen or Amy, but I'll do my best. Today was another good day. Quiet, but good. I think b/c dad had such a busy day yesterday, he wasn't quite as energetic today. Although he did find the time to write several more sentences for us today. Sadly, I think his writing might be better now as compared to when he's 100% healthy. Dad has never been known for his penmanship. I also got to experience something with dad today that hasn't happened for a while: we watched some sports together. He was able to keep his eyes open for 15-20 minutes at a time as we watched some college basketball on TV. We were all very impressed. We also got him to do some hand exercises today. For about 10 minutes, he used one of those grip strength improvers. He would do 15 repetitions or so on one hand and then switch it over to another and do 15 more reps. We had hoped he could maybe do 10 reps on each hand and be done so he far exceeded our expectations. My favorite part of the day was when him and Aunt Judi were doing their usual sparring. Even injured, dad loves to give Aunt Judi a hard time. She told him to stop trying to push her away. He then responded by taking his hand, putting it up to her face and playfully pushing her away. The best part was he had a big smile on his face the whole time. It was good to see the mischievous side of dad is still going strong. Have a good night everybody. You know, I kind of feel like Doogie Howser when he used to write on his computer at the end of every show...

  2. Nice job Mike. I was up to see you Dad last week and he slept while I was there....I think he knew it was me and thought I was probably going to talk about the budget at Cat. I was impressed with the care he was getting and just prayed he would return to us one day as the same old Dick Hasty we all know and love. God Bless you all as you move him north. Love to all. Dick, you better watch sparring with the princess who makes you laugh somehow she can whip up some mean grub and good dessert when you least expect it and when you get two in the kitchen you know there is know way out on that tag team. I am sure that Judi has some extra tricks up her sleeve with the help of some nurses. She will get ya when you least expect it. HA HA

  5. Oh Mike you did a great job! Of course I cried also about watching sports together. I know in my heart you two will be doing a lot of that in the near future! Hopefully in the future dad and I will be doing our usual things too. Me talking and complaining about everthing and him telling me to settle down and to not get so worked up! I miss him so much and I cant wait to see him! Mike, I am so proud of you. You have done such a great job with dad and handling all of the financial things. He will be so proud of you when he can fully understand how you have taken over everything and how well you have done it! I know Mom is looking down on you saying "Thats my boy!" Now dont let this go to your head beacuse I still stand by the fact that I am the favorite child! Love all of you there! Amy

  6. It nice to see the Hasty family communicating in the normal way. Teasing!! Mike and Amy, you have both done a great job in taking control of all aspects of this situation. Tell Uncle Dick Im rooting for him in the sparring with my mom. He is every bit as onry as she is and she better watch herself. If I know my uncle...He will have the last laugh!
    Love to all, Sara

  7. WOW! I can't read any of this without crying. You have all done a wonderful job. I am so glad to know that Dick is moving to Illinois to be closer to all of his family. Mike and Amy you have done a fantastic job of caring for your Dad, while taking care of all of your own family members also. Our prayers and love are with Dick continuously. Love, Jo & Tom

  8. Great Job, Mike! I'm so thankful Aunt Judi started this for all of us and everyone has done a great job keeping it up. It's fun to see the different perspectives of what has happened each day. I'm proud of all of you down there doing bedside care---I know first hand how tough it can be---especially when Dick is having challenges. But, I must say, he seems to give it his all when he is able. I have all the confidence in him that he will be an over-achiever when it comes to his physical therapy. We all know he doesn't sit still very long when he is well and we all look forward to seeing him succeed and come home to Morton ASAP! I'm so glad I had a chance to be with him and hold his hand and encourage him. It was emotionally and physically draining, but just being at his bedside gave me a first-hand chance to see all the prayers of so many in action. I'm sure our "Hasty guardian angels" have been with him the whole time. We all love Dick so much and look forward to seeing him come back home to us! Keep up the good work---we'll be praying for a safe flight! God's Blessings,
    Cheryl

  9. Mike---I am glad that you and your Dad got to watch come b-ball especially since that time is precious to you and to spend it in the company of your Dad how exciting! Bring on the cardinal games!!! That will surely keep his eyes open and put a smile on his face! Praying for your Dad and you on your air ambulance flight--and for all the questions to be answered by the social worker and the insurance company. You are doing great--keep your head up! Love you both!!! Tina
