Day 43- Fantastic News!!

Good evening everybody. Sorry for the late post. It appears I, Mike, was nominated to write thie blog this evening. Dad received amazing news today: He will be leaving the hospital and going home on April 15th. The progress he has made is truly amazing. He will be going home 7 weeks after his accident. That is unbelievable considering we were told right after the accident he would probably be in Tampa for 3 months! I can't even begin to tell you how happy dad is knowing he will get to sleep in his own bed in about a week. He will still have to do outpatient therapy for an undetermined amount of time, but what a relief it will be to him to be back in the comfort of his own home.

Today was another day filled with therapy. Dad gets about 4-5 hours of various types of therapy each day. While the work is hard, he gives it 100% each time b/c he knows it's the only way he will be able to get back to the active lifestyle he enjoys so much. Even though he is tired and sore at the end of each day, it's obvious the therapy is doing wonders for dad physically and mentally. He told me tonight he feels a little bit more like himself each day. I know he can see the light at the end of the tunnel. If the man only knew how long that tunnel was when he started this journey, he would be truly amazed.

Thanks to everyone for reading. And thanks to all of you for the love and support you have shown my dad. I will leave you with this quote from Mahatma Gandhi that I think sums up dad's desire to get better: “If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.

  3. Awesome! I spent about an hour yesterday with Dick and watched his progress in the PT room. He was "kickin' butt" and workin' up a good sweat. He broke every rep record he had done the previous day (imagine that!). Two of his therapist told us during his session that they were recommending a 7-10 day departure. It is truly amazing what he has accomplished!...Don Abel

  4. This is truly amazing! We are looking so forward to seeing Dick this summer in his own home in Morton. Thank you to everyone for all your prayers. Dick's will and all of the prayers has helped this man's determination to become the person he is today. Again, thank you and please continue to pray as Dick continues with his physical therapy. Love, Jo & Tom

  8. Praise the Lord for all our prayer warriors that helped Dick get to this point---and beyond! I watched some therapy yesterday and boy was he working!!! He even said, "for a guy that always walked 4 miles each day, I'm struggling to walk on the treadmill for a few minutes!" He even had to step up and back down on a block ten times in a row---he was sweating---but you could tell he felt good that he could do it better each time! He is amazing---thanks for all the love and care shown by so many friends and family. He couldn't have done it without all the support. We plan to have a big party when he is up for it. We all have a lot to celebrate!
I'm so proud of my big brother! Cheryl

  9. Yes, Dick the quote fits you to a tee!!!

The one I keep close to me in simpler terms is "If you dream it you cant do it." and "The harder you work, the luckier you get." And where did it say a blonde could not ride a HARLEY DAVIDSON with many other successful stories to go with that.
Once again the man above took care of a very special person with a couple of angels watching.. :) :)
